Answer times

I am currently looking for jobs in Japan from abroad. I mostly apply for jobs by e-mail and got some replies from companies and invitation for interviews. Nevertheless the time to answer from the people in Japan is surprisingly high. Sometimes it takes week until I get an answer and this even after the first contact has been etablished. Is this normal? Does anybody have similar experiences?

Hi Luis Enrique,

Yes, it does generally take some time for Japanese companies to reply to candidates. The decision-making process often involves more people than just the person you’re in contact with. That means that your contact person will have to consult with his or her colleagues and superiors before getting back to you. If you’re applying in English, this could also involve time-consuming back-and-forth translation of your resume and e-mails.

Generally, it’s easier to search for a job when you are in Japan. Most companies insist on face to face interviews, often multiple. If you’re abroad, the company just might have little immediate interest in you because they know you can’t come for an interview the next day.

Hello Mary,

Thanks for your reply. I also got the feeling that it’s better to look for a job from Japan. Especially when you have some doubt about the job/company it takes a lot of thinking whether it is worth to fly to Japan for an interview or not. Beeing there you could just go and have a look.

Anyway, thank you for the advice.

cheers
