When Tokyo Tower was completed in 1958 it was heralded as a symbol of Japan's burgeoning economic prowess. Alas, some now bemoan news that the world's tallest (333 meters) self-supporting steel tower is in hock for loans taken to build an elite but bankrupt golf club. It's just another pawn - or rook - on the real estate chessboard. But oh what a game this is in Japan. Constant construction is bolstered by such phenomena as mega-drugstore chains (Japan's fastest growing industry) opening hundreds of outlets annually. Not to mention the housing market! An April Japanese Real Estate Investor Survey shows 82 percent of those surveyed - from pension funds to developers - planned to find new property investments in the next year. Sure, the slightly taller knockoff of Paris's Eiffel Tower may change hands. But we can always look forward to a bigger and better tower slated for construction by 2011. Perhaps it will symbolize an even stronger economy in which the real estate industry will play no small part. Been feeling a bit overdressed lately? It's not all in your head. There's a new tradition in town. Thanks to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Japan's dress-down 'Cool Biz' campaign is back again for the second summer. It's not only reportedly giving companies the energy saving go-ahead to turn down the AC, but is said to be a major factor behind a 2005 increase in retail sales - the first in nine years. It seems that half of the nation's businessmen (according to one poll) who tossed aside their jackets and ties had to buy newly sanctioned summer attire such as the increasingly popular Okinawan "kariyushi" shirt.
If you plan to use your newfound fashion freedom to make a statement, however, bear in mind where you work. If a reprieve from the dress code isn't declared don't assume otherwise. If it is, be a good salaryman (or woman) and take your cue from what the higher-ups are wearing. If your not sure, ask. Meeting with business clients or a potential employer? Better safe than sorry. (And don't forget that hanky used exclusively for wiping your sweat-soaked brow.) If you're in a position to dictate the dress code, getting creative with summer office-attire guidelines can help boost team spirit and cool down workplace tension. Not to mention save yen by lowering the office thermostat.
